What is Bowenwork
Bowenwork® is a holistic, soft-tissue therapy that relaxes and returns the body to a healing state. Bowenwork practitioners apply light pressure through minimal precisely located moves over tendons, muscles, and nerve bundles (interpenetrated by fascia). In response, the body resets various systems (respiratory, digestive, lymphatic, circulatory, etc.) and tensional patterns, allowing the body to return to a balanced, healing state, resulting in a renewed sense of well being. Each person responds to Bowenwork sessions in accordance with the needs of that individual. Often a client begins to respond immediately. In most cases following a few, gentle moves over muscle, tendons, and soft tissue, a healing response follows on physical, chemical, emotional, mental & energetic levels.
Bowenwork practitioners routinely see hundreds of conditions respond positively to Bowenwork. In addition to the many musculoskeletal conditions that improve, problems relating to respiration, digestion, reproduction, lymphatics, energy, and mood respond well.

Is Bowenwork Right For You
Bowenwork's gentle, non-invasive nature is the key to its' success. This therapy attracts countless consumers, whether to explore Bowenwork as practitioners; to help their individual chronic & acute conditions; or to support the health of family and friends. Bowenwork is gentle and safe enough for newborns to the aged, who can safely experience a session, even when other therapies are not recommended.
Bowenwork's gentle application makes it easy on the practitioner while presenting minimal risk of developing repetitive strain injuries or "absorbing" the effects of a client's emotional health issues -- two occupational hazards that contribute to practitioner burnout. Learn more about HOW bowenwork benefits practitioners, whether certified professionals or laymen who work on family and friends. Bowenwork can be performed in many settings. No special equipment, lotions, or oils are needed, and it can be performed through light clothing in lieu of bare skin.

What Does Bowenwork Do For The Body
Bowenwork allows the innate healing capacity of the body to reset via the vast communication network of fascia. We take the body from 'fight-flight-freeze' mode, easing it into 'rest-relax-repair' mode quickly. Sessions are approximately an hour, depending on procedures needed. Three to five sessions are recommended, 5 to 10 days apart, to help the body establish new patterns, and move away from familiar dysfunctional patterns. Depending on individual needs, additional sessions may be needed, but with more response time between sessions.
"It is an unusual, minimalistic technique that involves applying a series of light, rolling moves over specific areas of muscles, fascia, tendons, and ligaments, interspersed with short mandatory rests to allow the body to integrate the effects of the work. Bowenwork is often performed through loose, lightweight clothing, so people do not need to undress, and no massage oils or lotions are used. Clients usually lie on a bed or massage table, or are seated comfortably to receive the work, (which may be performed in a clinic), home, workplace or sports setting." -S. Gustafson, BSN, RN, Sr. Instructor & Bowenwork Practitioner
Bowenwork (also known as Bowtech - the Original Bowen Technique) is a dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy that was developed by the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia. Bowen’s work was based on his ability to sense inflammation in the body. Sometimes called the 'homeopathy of bodywork', it utilizes subtle inputs to the body at the superficial fascia level, stimulating the body to heal itself, often profoundly.
"Bowenwork is a very gentle, soft-tissue technique that resets dysfunctional tissue tension patterns, and supports the body in healing itself (Gustafson, 2010). It facilitates a state of relaxation by resetting the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic (fight/flight) dominance to parasympathetic (relax/restore) mode. In this phase, internal organs function more optimally -- with improved digestion, assimilation of nutrients, capillary circulation, tissue healing, and elimination of waste products from the body (Oswald Rentsch, 2007).
As the body’s tensional integrity is restored, alignment occurs naturally for improved posture and benefit to all systems. Effects hold well because the body is doing the work itself at its own pace, and in its own time. Success rates exceed 80% for pain relief and lessening or alleviation of numerous conditions -- both acute and chronic.
With very few contraindications, Bowen is safe and appropriate for everyone from newborns to the elderly and infirm, and elite athletes. It is commonly used in hospitals in Australia, New Zealand, England and 27 other countries, as well as by Australian professional athletic teams and Australia's Olympic team.

"It has been suggested that the Bowen Technique may introduce specific harmonic frequencies to the body systems. Sound and music have been used in healing rituals in all of the world's cultures. In ancient Greece, the relationship between healing and harmonic vibration was the foundation of a school of healing established by Pythagoras. Since that time, there has been speculation that specific frequencies affect particular parts of the body.
The resonance model, as interpreted by Linda Edwards, Sylvia Oliva, and Jo Anne Whitaker, supports this as an explanation of how the Bowen Technique affects the body. The body is like a fine violin. The healthiest body or the most coveted STRADIVARIUS will not function properly without perfect tuning. The Bowen Technique like the Stradivarius may be based on resonance. In either case, the energy must be directed to the right spot with the right tension in order to create a vibrational pattern that correlates with a specific frequency. Since sound travels through all substances this may explain how the Bowen Technique affects so many areas of the body. Bowen Therapy compliments many other traditional, as well as non traditional, treatment modalities for this reason." - American Bowen Academy |
